The pelvic-floor rule no one mentions: exhale on the effort

August 16, 2026

Bracing - how you breathe and hold your midsection during a lift - matters more after 40, and most programs never mention it. The common gym cue is to hold your breath and bear down hard. After 40, that's the wrong default.

The rule here is simple and constant: exhale on the effort, never hold your breath through a rep.

Why the cue changes

Breath-holding and hard downward pressure spike the load on the pelvic floor - exactly the tissue that needs protecting, not pressuring, in this decade. Exhaling on the effort keeps the lift strong without the spike.

And because no set in this program ever goes near a max, the strain-and-hold bracing cues other programs rely on are never needed anyway.

One honest note

If you ever feel pressure, heaviness, or leaking that gets worse with weight, that's a conversation for a pelvic health clinician - common, normal, and never something to train through.

The program's job is to train you hard within rules that respect the decade. That one is a rule worth keeping everywhere, not just here.
