Two days done beats five days planned: programming the 45+ real week

September 30, 2026

Hand circling a training day on a wall calendar with a marker

Every January, 45+ clients arrive with five-day plans. By March, most are training zero days a week, because the plan required a life they do not have.

The coach's job is not to program the client's aspiration. It is to program his calendar. Two sessions done every week beats five sessions planned and two done randomly, and it is not close.

Why frequency promises fail

The five-day plan dies by a thousand cuts: the late meeting, the kid's game, the bad shoulder day. Each miss is small, but the client experiences the plan as constantly failed, and a program that feels like failure gets abandoned regardless of its quality.

Two anchored sessions, scheduled like appointments, succeed at a near-perfect rate. The client experiences the plan as working, which it is, because adherence is the program.

The minimum effective dose is not a consolation prize

Two full-body sessions a week covers every major pattern with enough weekly volume to build real strength in this population. This is not a compromise you apologize for; it is the evidence-based floor, and it works.

Build the week around it: two anchors, full body, big patterns. Everything beyond that, a third session, a walk, mobility work, is opportunistic bonus, explicitly labeled as bonus so the client never reads a missed bonus as a failure.

The expansion path

When the two anchors are habitual, a couple of months in, some clients earn a third day. It gets added as a celebration of adherence, not as an expectation, which keeps the psychology right.

And the anchors survive everything: travel weeks, crunch quarters, December. The client who has kept two days through a hard year has the identity, I am a man who trains, and identity is what five-year retention is made of.

The roster math

Ten clients on sustainable two-day programs out-retain and out-progress twenty clients on aspirational five-day plans, and take a fraction of the Sunday-night triage time.

Under-programming the calendar is the highest-ROI coaching decision available with this population. The empty days on the plan are not laziness. They are the design.
